Fishguard has a busy and vibrant artistic life. There is always something going on in both visual art and music. The quality of the clear light and natural beauty of the area has attracted artists for many years, and in the present day there are over 20 professional artists living and working here! The Fishguard Arts Society , which embraces professional and amateur members alike, is very active, with exhibitions, workshops and events throughout the year. There are many varied galleries to visit, such as the studio/gallery of artist Beth Robinson, Oriel Glan y Mor , the West Wales Arts Centre, which showcases local artists as well as artists of national repute, and the world famous Fishguard Last Invasion Tapestry , (inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, made by the townspeople to commemorate the bicentenary of the attempted French Invasion of Britain in 1797), which is on display in the Town Hall. If you want to improve your painting skills, Indigo Brown offers residential painting courses.
There is music for all tastes here too: since 1970, the Fishguard International Music Festival has been organising concerts by some of the world’s leading musicians in venues throughout the town. Fishguard plays host to several diverse festivals throughout the year, the annual Easter ARTSfest features art exhibitions along with music, literature and film events, the Fishguard Folk Festival, held every May bank holiday, attracts performers and audiences from around the world; the Aberjazz Pembrokeshire Jazz’n’Blues Festival takes place in the early autumn. There is a very active local choir, Côr Abergwaun, and the ebullient Goodwick Brass Band with its musical director Gareth Ritter. Or you could drop in to ‘Folk at the Oak’ every Tuesday night, beginning at 8pm at the Royal Oak on Market Square, to listen or even to join in! Concerts, recitals and lectures are organised throughout the year by the West Wales Arts Centre,.
